Brasil Without Barriers

Project

Brasil Without Barriers

Location

Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Target

Brasil Without Borders aims to break down the barriers of social and educational change in Brazil by strengthening community-based organizations that educate and empower, providing opportunities, tools, and resources, supporting community leadership, mentoring, and teacher training, preserving Afro-Brazilian arts and culture, and facilitating global awareness, cultural exchanges and collaborations

Impact

ABCR offers free classes for children and adults in computer literacy, basketball, capoeira, traditional Afro-Brazilian embroidery, and homework tutoring. At various times throughout the year, ABCR offers other classes such as guitar, arts and crafts, and more. Since they opened their doors in May 2009, they’ve maintained an average of 80-100 students registered for their classes, over 80% of them are young children under 15 years old. ABCR does more than offer free classes.

Throughout the year, ABCR volunteers teach women arts and crafts and/or embroidery, a marketable skill they can use to supplement or create an income. The specific style of traditional African embroidery-needlework that they teach is very popular in Bahia as decoration for dresses, scarves, and household items like napkins and tablecloths. It is always made by hand. Adult and children both learn to make various types of handicrafts that can be sold to locals and tourists.

Escuela de Capoeira Nago-Peru: Proyecto Educativo IWA PELE

Project

Escuela de Capoeira Nago-Peru:Proyecto Educativo Iwa Pele

Location

Alto da Bela Vista, Itapuã, Brazil

Target

The Iwa Pele project was set up in 2012 to address issues of social exclusion and marginalisation affecting poor, mainly Afro-descendant communities in Lima, Peru. Voluntary staff work with children in the Municipality of La Victoria, a district affected by high rates of poverty, violence and social exclusion. Through a range of artistic, cultural and educational activities including dance, percussion and drawing, the Iwa Pele project provides a safe and friendly space for vulnerable children from the community to develop personal and social skills to better confront the everyday challenges that they face.

Impact

Since 2013 the Iwa Pele project has been offering the children weekly Capoeira classes with Profesor Fernando Hurtado from Capoeira Nago-Peru. The classes enable the children to develop important skills such as confidence, self-esteem and discipline providing them with a non-violent approach to challenging the community violence around them. Through learning about the Afro-descendant history and roots of Capoeira they are also able to develop greater understanding and connection with their own African roots and identity, giving them a much needed sense of pride in their community’s culture and history.

Projeto Kirimurê

Project

Projeto Kirimurê

Location

Alto da Bela Vista, Itapuã, Brazil

Target

The aim of Projeto Kirimurê is to provide the highest quality and lasting experience for Kirimurê participants in proportion to their limited funds. They target younger children in order influence them positively from an earlier age. Older children who have grown in the program are now assisting classes and giving continuity to the program, thus benefitting as well in their new capacities as role models while gaining experiences that will present them with opportunities in the future.

Impact

Projeto Kirimurê provides a safe and nurturing space to minimize the time children spend on the street, as well as provides developmental tools to complement the limited formal education they may get. Through the practice of Capoeira, Projeto Kirimurê opens a dialogue with the children about who they are, why they are special, where they come from, and how to find positive solutions to seemingly impossible problems. As the children learn the game of Capoeira, its music, history and philosophy, they are developing physical and emotional strength, discovering their roots, and building self-esteem and character.

Literacy classes, homework help, psychological attendance, workshops in health and environmental education, traditional arts and crafts, as well as field trips to cultural and educational events are also offered. Moreover, children receive a nutritious daily snack and celebrate many holidays and special occasions together. Families are involved as much as possible, including through the coordination of an active mothers association AMABEL (Associação de Mães de Bela Vista de Itapuã).

Capoeira Feminista

Project

Capoeira Feminista

Location

Recife, Brazil

Target

This group targets the “City of Lost Children”, a community close to Recife, Brazil. It is an underserved community with high levels of poverty and drug trafficking. There is no accessible public health care, libraries, playgrounds, or community centers.

Impact

Former street youth who grew up in the community have developed a peer teaching project that focuses on empowerment through art. On the streets, they teach four classes a week, including Capoeira, hip-hop, visual art, music, circus and skateboarding, reaching over 400 children a month. Thus, their classes create a positive environment for children, building peace amongst rivals, and ensuring that children get healthy snacks.

To create a safe space at all times of day, they hope to install outdoor public lighting and build a cover for the only recreational space: a concrete soccer rectangle. Their future goal is to build an art school/community center for children and youth. It should have a community kitchen to prepare hot lunches for kids and families, a food bank, a library, free internet access with computers, dance/movement/art studio, small cafe and retail store to teach employment skills and generate income and educational courses.
