Purpose: To research and create an active network of capoeira social projects for the C4R Research Hub. To strategize and develop event awareness, generate interest and serve as a communication platform to the general public (capoeristas and non-capoeristas) regarding the Capoeira Projects with Social objectives

Commitment: Minimum 6 months – part time

Overview Capoeira4Refugees

Capoeira4Refugees works with refugee communities and particularly traumatised children and youth using the Brazilian art/sport of capoeira to bring psychosocial benefits such as increased self-respect and reduced levels of violence. Capoeira4Refugees was founded in 2007 working with street children in Syria (where it still has projects).  C4R has been active in the West Bank, Palestine, since 2011 and in Jordan since 2014.

Role Overview

The Researcher and Community Manager will gather data on capoeira social projects, for publication on the C4R research hub.  As part of the role you will draw on your own network with the capoeira community to create relationships with the groups, and create and maintain a network (using tools such as Facebook). You will create original content to be published on the website (drawing also on original research and materials created by C4R as part of its programming).  You will also source and collate research on capoeira that would be useful for the capoeira community, and as part of creating a database of capoeira social project resources.  You will be expected to create a strategy, including targets and timelines, as part of the role.


The Research and Community Manager is a highly motivated individual with experience and a passion for social media and proven knowledge in the art of creating relevant posts, blogging and online participation with the aim of creating awareness of Capoeira and encourage participation. Capoeira4Refugees is looking for an individual who has an understanding of capoeira and sports and development and how to promote the event for people within as well as outside of the field of capoeira. The target market consists of individuals with a range of different experience, age and interest which requires a cultural sensitivity and innovative thinking.

Main Responsibilities

  • Research and engage with Social Capoeira Projects/groups
  • Demonstrate ability to map out strategy and a proactive process / foresee possible threats
  •   Create a strategy for developing the research hub including a communications strategy
  •   Expand the C4R database of social capoeira projects targeting at least 100
  •   Develop relationships with at least 50% of the listed projects on the database
  •   Create an active network for resource and information sharing (such as volunteer opportunities, batizados, events, fundraising projects)
  •   Create Q&A sheet for relevant scenarios / feedbacks for Capoeira groups/individuals
  •   Create online sign up forms and automated processes so relevant content can be captured
  •   Create, and manage all published content (images, video and written).
  •   Develop and expand community and/or blogger outreach efforts.
  •   Oversee design (ie: Facebook Timeline cover, profile pic, thumbnails, ads, landing pages, Twitter profile, and blog)
  •   Design, create and manage promotions and Social ad campaigns templates.
  •   Update Website with the findings, communicate back to the individuals/groups
  •   Compile report for management showing results (ROI).
  • Create a database of capoeira social projects
  • Contact project leaders, build a relationship, detail the project on the database.  Maintain an active relationship with the projects listed on the database, including through information sharing, setting up a facebook group (and managing the group through creating and sharing of content).
  • Manage a network of capoeira social projects and supporters
  • Create and mobilise an online community that has a shared passion for supporting capoeira social projects. This will include having a communications strategy in place,  including objectives and targets.
  • Research and post Academic papers/ findings on Capoeira
  • Research and publish online academic findings/articles about relevant topics such as Impact / Gender / Dialogue / Community building / Health Wellbeing / Best Practise through Capoeira
  •   Maintain a working knowledge of principles of SEO including keyword research
  •   Acknowledge other people’s work, pictures, quotes and thank them
  • Highlight projects and findings via Social Media
  •   Monitor, listen and respond to users in a “Social” way while cultivating interest.
  •   Create FB Group and Hashtag. Conduct online advocacy and open stream for cross-promotions.
  •   Monitor effective benchmarks (best practices) for measuring the impact of Social Media campaigns. Analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns in an effort to maximize results.
  •   Manage and create content for C4R’s online presence including on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and through blogs. Post on relevant blogs and create content as needed
  •   Keep the website updated, collaborate with Design team and Webteam
  •   Support with creating content for and disseminating newsletter Become an advocate in Social Media spaces, engaging in dialogues and answering questions where appropriate. Identify threats and opportunities in user generated content surrounding the business. Report notable threats to Project Manager and management.
  •   Analyze campaigns and translate anecdotal or qualitative data into recommendations and plans for revising the Social Media campaigns.

Person Specification


  •   Excellent writing and editing skills: English (fluent) / Strong presentation and communication skills
  •   Has a capoeira network and understand the capoeira community
  •   Hands on, motivated and full of ideas
  •   Hands off, still motivated but strategic on implementing ideas
  •   Excellent organisational and project management skills
  •   Experience in data analysis & reporting
  •   IT user & project management skills
  •   Experience in international development, ideally with a focus on sport, children/youth and refugees
  •   Experience of working in multi-cultural teams Exhibits the ability to jump from the creative side of marketing to analytical side, able to demonstrate why their ideas are analytically sound.
  •   Displays in-depth knowledge and understanding of Social Media platforms, their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Google+Local, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest etc.) and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios.
  •   Excellent written and spoken English and Portuguese, a third language desirable. Displays ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and video format.
  •   Exceeds at building and maintaining relationships, online and off.
  •   Makes evident good technical understanding and can pick up new tools quickly.
  •   Highly knowledgeable in the principles of “Search and Social”.
  •   Demonstrates winning Social Customer Service techniques. Possesses great ability to identify potential negative or crisis situation and apply conflict resolution principles to mitigate issues.
