ABADÁ Capoeira Capoeira for Refugees

Target

ABADÁ-Capoeira seeks to promote cultural and human values based on respect, socialization and freedom. It hopes to accomplish these goals by spreading the art of capoeira in and through universities, schools, clubs, associations and diverse communities. A special focus lies on refugees, with the social project Capoeira for Refugees.

Impact

By emphasizing the lessons inherent in its Brazilian cultural and historic roots, the project aims at promoting social integration between people of different backgrounds and classes, while keeping sight of its social goals. Furthermore, ABADÁ-Capoeira seeks to instill good character, dignity and strong personal values in its students, particularly in children, youth and refugees.

CAPOEIRA MARAZUL

Mar Azul Social Project

Location

Maputo, Mozambique

Target

The independent social project ‘MarAzul’ started in 2003 when Mestre Joãozinho da Figueira was living in Maputo and started offering free classes to children at the Penha Palhota. The Penha Palhota was an area by the sea, with the shade of coconut trees, but was full of rubbish, so the first step was to buy lots of brooms and start cleaning!

Impact

The classes are not just about capoeira – the children do a variety of activities including learning the musical instruments and songs from capoeira, African dance, drawing, group games, and thematic workshops where they explore different topics relating to health, hygiene, environment and education.

CAPOEIRA AMAZONAS ZAGREB

Project

Fighting with a heart

Location

Brno, Czech Republic

Target

Project focused on children with risky or offending behaviour, from dysfunctional and poor families of excluded areas and ghettos in the Brno city. Additionally, pupils of boarding schools for children with special educational needs are included in the project.

Impact

Capoeira helps create alternative options to the risky and criminal behaviour, helping them them create new positive attitudes and values.
