World Capoeira Arts Foundation: Projeto Maculelê

Project

World Capoeira Arts Foundation: Projeto Maculelê

Location

Decatur, Georgia, USA

Target

Projeto Maculelê was created to enrich the lives of at-risk children in poor neighborhoods throughout Brazil and in the USA. Many of these children suffer from malnutrition, lack of appropriate adult attention, and other conditions related to poverty. Without motivation and self-confidence building, these children often fall victim to the world of crime and drugs.

Impact

Maculelê’s projects touch the lives of many children, offering an opportunity for a healthier, better life through personal growth. They aim to create safe learning environments, art and culture workshops, health education, reliable role models, and nutritious snacks.

Through capoeira, they open a dialogue with the children to discover who they are, why are they special, where they come from, and how to find positive solutions to seemingly impossible problems. As they learn capoeira, its music, history and philosophy, they develop physical and emotional strength to solve problems, make friends, and develop their self-esteem.

Escuela de Capoeira Nago-Peru: Proyecto Educativo IWA PELE

Project

Escuela de Capoeira Nago-Peru:Proyecto Educativo Iwa Pele

Location

Alto da Bela Vista, Itapuã, Brazil

Target

The Iwa Pele project was set up in 2012 to address issues of social exclusion and marginalisation affecting poor, mainly Afro-descendant communities in Lima, Peru. Voluntary staff work with children in the Municipality of La Victoria, a district affected by high rates of poverty, violence and social exclusion. Through a range of artistic, cultural and educational activities including dance, percussion and drawing, the Iwa Pele project provides a safe and friendly space for vulnerable children from the community to develop personal and social skills to better confront the everyday challenges that they face.

Impact

Since 2013 the Iwa Pele project has been offering the children weekly Capoeira classes with Profesor Fernando Hurtado from Capoeira Nago-Peru. The classes enable the children to develop important skills such as confidence, self-esteem and discipline providing them with a non-violent approach to challenging the community violence around them. Through learning about the Afro-descendant history and roots of Capoeira they are also able to develop greater understanding and connection with their own African roots and identity, giving them a much needed sense of pride in their community’s culture and history.

Projeto Kirimurê

Project

Projeto Kirimurê

Location

Alto da Bela Vista, Itapuã, Brazil

Target

The aim of Projeto Kirimurê is to provide the highest quality and lasting experience for Kirimurê participants in proportion to their limited funds. They target younger children in order influence them positively from an earlier age. Older children who have grown in the program are now assisting classes and giving continuity to the program, thus benefitting as well in their new capacities as role models while gaining experiences that will present them with opportunities in the future.

Impact

Projeto Kirimurê provides a safe and nurturing space to minimize the time children spend on the street, as well as provides developmental tools to complement the limited formal education they may get. Through the practice of Capoeira, Projeto Kirimurê opens a dialogue with the children about who they are, why they are special, where they come from, and how to find positive solutions to seemingly impossible problems. As the children learn the game of Capoeira, its music, history and philosophy, they are developing physical and emotional strength, discovering their roots, and building self-esteem and character.

Literacy classes, homework help, psychological attendance, workshops in health and environmental education, traditional arts and crafts, as well as field trips to cultural and educational events are also offered. Moreover, children receive a nutritious daily snack and celebrate many holidays and special occasions together. Families are involved as much as possible, including through the coordination of an active mothers association AMABEL (Associação de Mães de Bela Vista de Itapuã).

Aluaiê Capoeira: The Afro-Brazilian Arts & Cultural Exchange Institute

Location

London, Essex, Sussex & Kent, U.K.

Target

The Afro-Brazilian Arts & Cultural Exchange Institute is a charity based at the heart of London, which objective is to promote and to use Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian Arts to improve the life of the members of the community.Their projects include a Children’s Project, Parent & Children Project, Young people’s Project (11 to 17 years old), Special Needs Children’s Project, Vulnerable Adults Integration Project, Partially or totally visually impaired.

Impact

Capoeira Kids Classes at the Afro-Brazilian Arts & Cultural Exchange Institute are open to younger children and their parents. This way, children get a better sense of maintaining closeness, developing family unity, strengthening the degree of trust and bonding between each other, and improving the quality of life of the family as one. Their classes solely for children, aged 3-12, open them to interacting with each other, growing and learning Capoeira in a safe, nurturing and positive environment.

Children have the opportunity to develop their own style, to learn and be challenged by the movements passed on to them. Teachers encourage kids to interact with each other in singing and instrument playing. This course invites children to discover, explore and learn the beauty and mysteries of the Brazilian culture. But most of all, our Capoeira classes are based on having fun, as a mediator for learning.
