Target

Favela Mundo works in various regions of Rio de Janeiro, including Engenho de Dentro, a northern region of Rio. With work focused on education and culture, the organization gives free class to children and teenagers 6-18 years old in Capoeira, Maculelê Brazilian dance, ballet, jazz, theater, drawing, guitar, jongo, choral and circus For parents and over 16, there are courses offered for handicrafts, makeup and beauty, and nail art.

“For the most part, the profile of these children is one-parent families of women. Regardless, there are cases of unstructured families, living with violence and aggression. That’s why working with art becomes so necessary,” says Marcelo Andriotti, creator of the NGO.

Impact

Rio de Janeiro State University graduate students in Pedagogy complete internships with Favela Mundo, guaranteeing teachers. The organization has served over 1200 people since its foundation, and in 2014, Favela Mundo received an award from United Nations. The NGO was the only Brazilian organization selected for social inclusion at the World Cities Day Event.

Jogo Aberto with Gol de Letra

Target

Jogo Aberto, or “Open Game” in Vila Albertina hosts 15 different sport programs, including capoeira, futsal, skate, tchoukball, volleyball in Vila Albertina, a district located in the north of São Paulo. Jogo Aberto serves teenagers and young people from 8 to 20 years old via sports and educational activities in 7 different locations, including Fundacão Gol de Letra’s Headquarters, as well as 5 public schools in the region.

Impact

Jogo Aberto’s impact on the region of Vila Albertina has been so strong that the program has grown significantly by the demands of the community. It has added capoeira, gymnastics, running and hiking for adults, as well as a hiking group for young children. Skating, the most recent addition, was so successful that it now has its own place within the regularly scheduled programs. Jogo Aberto also hosts annual Family Days, where children, teenagers, and adults can come play and participate in sport together.

“I really liked joining the capoeira group. I always wanted to do it, but I only made my mind about it this year. I am fascinated, I think that it adds big values every day! Each movement has its fundament and carries a very rich history, which is not very much commented nowadays. Despite some difficulties, I never considered giving up, on the contrary, I faced the obstacles. That, thanks to our educator, who, besides teaching capoeira, taught us the importance of respecting and caring for people near us, this knowledge we will carry with us for the rest of our lives,” says Karen Nayara S. Silva, 14 years of age. She has practiced capoeira for 6 months now.

Fundaçao Cafu in São Paolo

Target

Marcos Evangelista de Morais, the former captain of the Brazilian football team founded Fundaçao Cafu, more commonly known as just Cafu. It is a non-profit organization founded in 2004 that creates alternative education opportunities for for over 1000 low-income children and young people a month in the neighborhood of Jardim Irene, where Cafu grew up, and its surrounding areas.

The organization utilizes vocational programs and sports like capoeira to build the self esteem and confidence of young people and adolescents. The foundation believes investing in the youth of Jardim Irene, as well as creating inclusive community programs, in order for youth to become active citizens.

Impact

With a focus on socio-educational learning, students are guided to build autonomy and seek solutions to the problems of their daily lives. Thus, the courses offered through Fundaçao Cafu give children a chance to transform the reality they live in and see it from a different perspective. Teachers host programs every day of the week, with a diverse range of options. The possibilities include capoeira, a walking group, handicraft courses. Additionally, FundacaoCafu offers psychological support services for children, music classes, hip hop, futsal, basketball, vocational training and arts and culture events.

Julio Otoni Project

Julio Otoni Project

Julio Otoni, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Target

Julio Otoni is a low income community with approximately 2,000 inhabitants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that, like many other favelas, has been heavily affected by criminal gangs, drugs and gun violence. Due to the extreme conditions of poverty and lack of occupational alternatives in the community, it is common for young children to become involved in gang culture. The cycle of poverty is further perpetuated through instances of teen pregnancy, lack of schooling and illiteracy, and lack of professional qualifications and other resources.

The Julio Otoni Project is a result of the collaboration of several NGOs, including REDEH, CEMINA, Instito Polen and the Jinga Project, in order to address many of these issues affecting youth and children in Julio Otoni, as well as to create a self-sustaining center to support the community.

Impact

Through the collaboration of these organizations, a community center was established in the middle of the favela, and has become a hub for community activities. With about 50 attendees per day in a community of 2,000, a huge success of the community center has been the after-school program. In order to keep children and youth busy and off the streets after school and during holidays, the center offers capoeira classes three times per week, as well as tutoring, English classes, computing, and environmental education.

Makani ‘My Space’ Zaatri Camp

Makani ‘My Space’

Location

Makani Center, Za’atari Refugee Camp, District 8

Target

The Makani Center in Za’atari refugee camp holds one of Relief International’s Innovation Labs, that aims to leverage the potential of youth in these uncertain and transitional circumstances. A selected group of 25 young males are encouraged to use social innovation within the camp environment to solve social issues, using Relief International’s resources.

These students are given a social capoeira class weekly that aims to foster a strong community of trust and teamwork. Using physical activity, games and capoeira conventions, this program encourages a safe space where these students can think for themselves and engage in a productive dialogue.

Impact

This two month project will begin to open students minds to new methods of critical thinking and to the connection between physical well-being and mental well-being. Using games, play, movements and music, these classes foster a positive energy that helps release stress, allow the students to focus on bodily movement and therefore reduce the impact of social expectations and pressures.

These students have quickly obtained a passion for capoeira, seeing it as a new way of thinking and recognising its benefits for self-confidence and teamwork.

Female only class in Ruwaad, Amman

Capoeira4Refugees in collaboration with Ruwwad

Jabal Nathif, East Amman

Target

This program targets women of all ages to create a safe space where they can come with their children, sisters, mothers and grandmothers, and enjoy some playful exercise.

Social capoeira seeks to undo some of the gender imbalances that restrict women’s mobility in Amman. These classes give women a space to exercise and discover a new artform with all the cultural aspects which come with that, including Portuguese songs and foreign instruments.

Impact

One of these students, a young woman who joined these classes with her mother at the beginning of the program almost two years ago, was particularly passionate about capoeira. She trained hard and was enthusiastic about learning everything about capoeira. She is now one of Capoeira4refugees’ full-time employed trainers. Dania is now providing social capoeira lessons in refugee camps and host communities across Jordan. She is learning about psychosocial support, child protection issues, and gaining experience in the humanitarian sector.
