ABADÁ Capoeira Capoeira for Refugees

Target

ABADÁ-Capoeira seeks to promote cultural and human values based on respect, socialization and freedom. It hopes to accomplish these goals by spreading the art of capoeira in and through universities, schools, clubs, associations and diverse communities. A special focus lies on refugees, with the social project Capoeira for Refugees.

Impact

By emphasizing the lessons inherent in its Brazilian cultural and historic roots, the project aims at promoting social integration between people of different backgrounds and classes, while keeping sight of its social goals. Furthermore, ABADÁ-Capoeira seeks to instill good character, dignity and strong personal values in its students, particularly in children, youth and refugees.

Afrika Yetu e.V.

Afrika Yetu e.V. is a non-profit initiative for development, culture, education and integration and offers classes for dancing, music and capoeira for children and youth of all cultural backgrounds and ages. The main idea is to bridge the African and European cultures and provide a platform to strengthen creativity, self-confidence and intercultural sensitivity through music, dance and play.

Impact

Afrika Yetu e.V. does not only offer capoeira classes, but also teaches salsa, drumming and kizomba to enhance the intercultural dialogue between African and European children and youth and bring more movement into their lives.

CAPOEIRA FREEDOM COLLECTIVE

Capoeira Freedom Collective

The Capoeira Freedom Collective – Palestine (CFCP) is a collective of Palestinians and foreigners practicing the Afro-Brazilian art form of capoeira in Ramallah, Palestine. It is not a capoeira group in the traditional sense, which follows a particular capoeira mestre and lineage, but rather a collaborative effort meant to share capoeira knowledge and learn together. This means that the CFCP is not exclusively dedicated to one form of capoeira–be it capoeira angola, capoeira contemporânea or capoeira regional–but is open to capoeira in all its richness and diversity.

Impact

The CFCP takes capoeira’s history of resistance against slavery and racism in Brazil seriously, and in so doing, strives to create a dynamic in which the constant struggle for freedom remains at the core of our practice. In this sense, we acknowledge that capoeira is itself a political act, and that by practicing capoeira we are identifying with a set of values that rejects oppression no matter who it involves.
